Philosophy of Care
Massage can affect you entirely – mind, body and soul. It can restore or maintain optimal biomechanics, thereby relieving pain and injury. It can also provide self-awareness of the tension held in our bodies. This awareness enables us to better address and relieve our stress and consequently enjoy more thorough relaxation.

“In an overloaded, stressed society, in need of contact, strength and leadership, the healthy relief of a non-invasive massage treatment with no unhealthy side effects could be a literal lifesaver – and a stroke of sanity.”
Time Magazine, March 9, 1987
Registered Massage Therapists have completed a minimum of 2200 hours of professional training. They are governed by the Regulated Health Practitioners Act (R.H.P.A), as are Chiropractors and Medical Doctors.

Thai Yoga Massage
Traditional Thai Massage, developed 2500 years ago in beautiful Thailand, was influenced by traditions of yoga from India, Buddhism, and Traditional Chinese Medicine. It incorporates practices of meditation, yoga, Tai Chi, Ayurveda, and the conscious use of breath. Thai Massage is performed in gentle, rhythmic movements and provides an energizing, balanced and dynamic experience for the body and soul.

A full body Thai Massage is performed on a floor mat with the receiver in loose, comfortable clothes and no oil is used. In this way practitioners can easily use their forearms, elbows, feet and knees. By palming and thumbing along the 10 major energy lines (‘sen’) the therapist aims to open the body so that energy is able to flow evenly through the meridian system, making recipients feel physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually balanced. When energy is blocked or restricted it will create sickness or disease, so by stretching the energy lines and applying firm, stimulating but soothing pressure to them a balancing of energy is achieved. Using a fluid, hypnotic Tai Chi motion with constant rocking and smooth transitions from one position to another allows for effective use of body weight and leverage to enable stretching of the body in many different ways.

Therapists are trained to respect each recipient’s level of flexibility and can therefore benefit the limber athlete as well as those who are less flexible. By stimulating energy, stretching and relaxing tense muscles, and improving circulation, Thai Massage can alleviate problematic conditions such as lower back pain, arthritis, headaches, digestive difficulties, neurological impairments, and stress related conditions. During pregnancy, discomfort and decreased mobility can be eased. Blood and lymphatic circulation are increased, and internal organs stimulated, all of which aid in strengthening the immune system.

A meditative state is practiced by both recipient and practitioner, reflecting the spirit of metta (unconditional love and compassion) and vipassana (moment to moment awareness).

Hawai'ian LomiLomi Massage
LomiLomi Massage was originally performed by the Kahunas in Hawaii as a rite of passage ceremony at transitional points in life (puberty, marriage). Over thousands of years it has evolved to its present form which is being taught and practiced outside Hawaii. Ancient Hawai'ian Temple Bodywork is used to soothe the body and promote a state of deep relaxation. The encompassing rhythmic strokes ease muscular tension and shift physical and energetic blocks, enabling the release of old patterns and tensions held in the body.

Explore Yourself
LomiLomi brings together many diverse elements, including breath, dance, music, and direction of consciousness to achieve its dynamic and beautiful results. Similar to Swedish massage because of its kneading and gliding strokes, it is a powerful tool for increasing circulation, soothing nerves and loosening muscle tissue. The recipient is lying on a massage table while the practitioner uses long forearm strokes from the head to the feet. Breath and sound are used to help direct and focus the flow of energy and to release mental and emotional tensions.

A Prayer in Motion
“The flight” is the dance sequence used by the practitioner in moving around the table which facilitates fluidity and keeps an abundance of energy flowing through the giver to the receiver.

Remember Who You Are
In the words of Harriette Kapualani Sakuma, LomiLomi teacher: “Everything that happens to us in our lifetime is registered in the body. Our thoughts, ideas, and beliefs are what keep us where we are, and in order to move forward in life, it is often necessary to change our established patterns. The Hawai'ian Kahuna knew that the easiest patterns to affect and change are those held in the body. Once these patterns soften and shift, our emotional, spiritual, and cognitive patterns are easier to access. In LomiLomi the body undergoes a profound shift in consciousness, is energized, aligned and opened to new experiences, and we can face change, new tasks and demands in our life with more confidence, creativity and power. Much of the work on and with the body in LomiLomi bypasses the conscious mind to open the pathways to the deep knowledge we already contain.”
